Academic Writing in English:
A Workshop for Ph.D. Students in the Humanities

Academic Writing in English is a workshop-based course that aims to enhance participants’ awareness of style, structure, grammar, and voice in academic writing. With the help of readings, presentations by the teacher, and exercises, participants will practice writing and will give and receive constructive critique on written work. The course work is designed not only to give participants insight into the characteristics of academic English, but also to help them reflect on their own writing practices, thus gaining an awareness of their own style, strengths, and aspects to work on. The course thus provides a foundation for the participants’ further work with written academic English.
Topics include writing clearly and avoiding pitfalls of academese; engaging with the ideas and words of other scholars; organizing the text and guiding readers through it; and revising for grammatical and idiomatic correctness.
The course consists of three modules of three hours each, plus one module of four hours. Each module will require approximately six hours’ preparation in the form of readings on language and genre-related topics and other students’ texts, as well as preparing one’s own text for others to read.
