PhD Masterclass: Multimodal research in communication, organization and management studies

It is our hope that we’ll be able to offer the course in the autumn of 2020 or spring of 2021.

This masterclass is aimed at doctoral students and staff interested in organizational semiotics, that is, the application of multimodal research to understanding organizational communication as well as the fields of organization and management studies.

The class will focus on the increasingly important role of multimodal communication in specific aspects of institutional life such as innovation, organizational identity, the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, corporate social responsibility and the legitimation of organizations and their activities. The course will also provide practical guidance in establishing and conducting research in and with actual organizations.

• Professor Renate Meyer, Vienna University of Economics and Business and Copenhagen Business School
• Associate Professor Nina Nørgaard (University of Southern Denmark)
• Professor Theo van Leeuwen (University of Southern Denmark)

Five elements will be combined in this course: (1) an introduction to the social semiotic approach to multimodal analysis (Prof. Van Leeuwen); (2)  the role of multimodal processes in the structures, relations and identities of contemporary organizations (Prof. Meyer); (3) multimodal organizational communication with a focus on sustainability (Assoc. Prof. Nørgaard); (4) the role of spatial design in organizational communication (Assoc. Prof. Aiello), and (5) building a framework for practical and effective research engagement with organizations, including issues such as data collection and commercial confidentiality (Prof. Höllerer).

Each masterclass session will include an introductory lecture and a hands-on workshop giving students an opportunity to work with real data. The course will also provide for individual consultations with the presenters and short presentations (appr. 10 minutes) by attending PhD students.

1. Send a brief CV and a 1-2-page description of your project to leeuwen@sdu.dk indicating specific questions that you would like to discuss, and whether you would like a consultation (appr 20 mins) with one or more of the teachers.
2. Register for the course.

Our events are open free of charge to PhD students from our own program, and from all other programs provided they also offer tuition free of charge to our students. ’Soon-to-be’ Phd students may also attend with permission from the event instructors and the Program Director, whom you should first contact if this applies to you (Cindie Aaen Maagaard at cindiem@sdu.dk).
