PhD-Workshop - What is excellent research - virtues and vices

Seminar med Svend Erik Larsen

Course Description
When researchers discuss excellence more often than not the focus is the research outcome and they use research intrinsic criteria – theory, method, material and the innovative take on the issue at hand. Important as it is, it is a perspective which in the long run – that is as the feeding ground for an entire career – is insufficient. When larger funding agencies, as for example The Danish National Research Foundation/Danmarks Grundforskningsfond, make a selection of projects that will hold a grant, the focus is also the research process that promotes or supports excellence, including the institutional framework, as well as the larger cultural context where the research eventually will circulate –‘ curiosity pays off’ is the slogan used by DNRF/DG.

The question is how a three-dimensional approach to excellence can be turned into practice in the research environment and by the individual researcher in specific research areas. The three dimensions, to my mind, are closely interconnected, yet not always carrying the same weight. I have attached three texts of my own, directly or indirectly addressing the issue of excellence and how to obtain it, each with a main focus –1)  one of interdisciplinarity as a condition for an excellent output, 2) another on the process, in this case as a criticism of it in a review of Walter Cohen’s recent literary history, and 3) the last one on Kant’s paradigm change, an issue that requires a historical and culturalawareness beyond disciplinary constraints to receive a relevant scholarly attention.

Requirements
In addition to the reading this PhD seminar asks participants to prepare a brief 10-minute presentation based on the PhD student’s own dissertation which addresses one of the three dimensions mentioned above: either the role of interdisciplinarity, the research process/institutional framework, or the integration of the wider cultural and historical context.
