Guest Researcher

The Law Department at SDU this summer welcomes a PhD scholar from Northern Uganda in Odense. Irene Anying does research on land rights, legal pluralism and dispute settlement in a post conflict society.

Irene Winnie Anying is a PhD scholar at the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies (IPSS) of Gulu University, Uganda. Based on rich practical experience, Irene’s current socio-legal research focuses on the post war effects on the potential of legal pluralism in land dispute resolution in Northern Uganda. During her current research stay in Denmark, which is part of the TrustLand project (http://trustland.me), she will continue to work on her thesis project. Her PhD supervisor is Martin Mennecke, associate professor of international law at the Department of Law at SDU.

Before joining IPSS, Irene worked in the fields of human rights and access to justice with a specific focus on land governance and administration. Irene has been an Access to Justice Advisor for USAID SAFE Program, a program run by the National Centre For State Courts in Uganda, where she provided technical support including capacity building to National Civil Society Organizations providing legal aid and paralegal services on land related matters across 20 Districts in Uganda. She also supported and participated development of resource materials for the Uganda Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development as well as Civil Society Organizations. Prior to this Irene worked among others as a head of programing human rights protection with a national non governmental organization. She also worked as a part time lecturing assistant at Faculty of Business and Development Studies at Gulu University, where she co-taught a course on Human Rights.
