Translation is one of the most characteristic activities of King Alfonso X’s scriptorium. The redaction in Castilian of the 'Estoria de España' and of the 'General estoria' is the reason for translating a large number of works of great diversity—Latin, Arabic, French. Most of them had never been translated before. By focusing on this fact, the critics have analysed the methods, the terminology that define the Alfonsine translation. The impact that the translations produced in this context had on the evolution of Castilian was also the subject of many notable studies. However, the conception of translation underlying the practices in the scriptorium has been less explored. This article intends to reconstruct the authors’ position about the work of 'traslado', starting from their own reflections on the question, rare and precious, scattered throughout the text by punctual hints. The selected excerpts pertain to the most significant sources of the 'General estoria', such as the Bible, the Matter of Troy, Ovid’s 'Metamorphoses', and Biblical texts of Arabic origin.
