Department of Economics

The Economic History platform focuses on teaching and research in economic history with a strong quantitative focus. In recent years, economic history has become an important and expanding field of applied economics. Thus, we use the latest methodologies from the social sciences, combined with those from the humanities, to examine important questions concerning health, migration, demography and development in general. To do so, we often employ large quantities of microlevel data and have particular expertise in machine learning for reading in such data from historical sources.

Internationally acknowledged as a leading research group in the field, we attract substantial grants and media coverage, as well as publishing books and articles with top outlets.

The platform is chaired by Professor Paul Sharp.
