Housing guarantee

SDU's housing guarantee depends on your student city and whether you are an exchange student or full-degree student:

  • Odense, Kolding, Esbjerg, Vejle: Full-degree and exchange students are guaranteed housing.
  • Sønderborg: Exchange students are guaranteed housing. Full-degree students are not guaranteed housing and should apply for housing as early as possible.

The guarantee means you will receive one housing offer if you apply by the deadline. Your choice of accommodation may be limited, and you cannot expect to receive your first choice.


How to apply

  • Full-degree students: you can apply 3 days after submitting your application for admission.
  • Exchange and guest students: you can apply immediately after submitting your application for admission.

If you are not enrolled as a student at SDU, your housing application will be cancelled automatically. If you are accepted to a different campus than expected, contact the Accommodation Office and they will help change your housing application.

Deadlines

To keep your housing guarantee, you must apply before:

  • 1 May (23:59 CET) for study start in September 
  • 1 November (23:59 CET) for study start in February

You can apply for housing even if your application for admission has not yet been accepted.

Application process

  • You should apply for housing as soon as possible.

    If you are a full-degree student, you can apply 3 days after submitting your application for admission.

    If you are an exchange student or guest student, you can apply immediately after submitting your application for admission.

    Your application will be cancelled automatically if you are not enrolled to SDU.

    Deadlines for housing guarantee

    To keep your housing guarantee, you must apply before:

    • 1 May (23:59 CET) for study start in September
    • 1 November (23:59 CET) for study start in February

    You must apply before the deadline to keep your housing guarantee - even if your application for admission has not yet been accepted.

  • You will receive a housing offer within a few weeks after your application for admission has been accepted and you are enrolled to SDU.

    The offer will include details about the residence, its location and the rent.

  • Once you receive the offer, you have 6 days to accept it. If you do not accept the offer within this period, the offer will be withdrawn and given to another applicant, so keep an eye on your email and spam folder.

    You will only receive one housing offer from SDU. If you decline the offer, you will have to look for alternate housing yourself.

  • After you have accepted the housing offer, you have 14 days (the cooling-off period) where you can change your mind and withdraw your acceptance.

    If you wish to keep the housing offer, you do not have to do anything in this period; your acceptance is final when the 14 days are over.

  • It is a big step to move to a different country. Make sure to prepare and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. We look forward to welcoming you to Denmark and SDU.

Frequently asked questions 

  • Yes, if you are not entirely sure about the housing offer, you have 14 days after you have accepted the offer (the cooling-off period) where you can change your mind and withdraw your acceptance.

  • When you have accepted the offer and the 14-day cooling off period has ended, you will receive a letter and lease contract with payment details. After that you must pay the deposit and rent for the first month. You will find the next deadline for rent in the lease contract.

  • Yes, any transfer fee charged by your bank is your expense. Make sure the full rent or deposit amount reaches the landlord or housing association.

  • You cannot choose a specific residence or have a guarantee to live with a particular student. Housing is allocated based on availability, and the housing guarantee only covers one offer.

    However, you are welcome to note your preferences in the application form, and the Accommodation Office will do their best to take them into account.

  • Yes, most student rooms are furnished with basic items such as a bed, desk, chair and wardrobe. Kitchens are usually shared and equipped with essential appliances. You will need to bring or buy smaller items like bedding, kitchenware and lamps.

  • You will receive detailed instructions with your housing offer. Usually, you can collect your keys at the local housing office during opening hours. If you arrive outside opening hours, you must arrange collection in advance.

  • Student housing is designed for individual students. If you plan to bring your spouse or children, you will need to look for family housing on the private market. Pets are not allowed in student housing.

  • If something is broken in your room you must report the issue immediately to the local housing office or landlord. You will receive contact details with your housing offer. It is important to document problems right after arrival to avoid being held responsible later.

  • Notice periods vary depending on the housing provider, they are usually between 1–3 months. Always check your contract for the specific terms.
