Empowerment and Social Mobilisation for Health

Gain insight into empowerment as a theoretical concept and a practical approach in the intersection between health, society and politics. This course offers knowledge about how social structures and political frameworks shape the opportunities for participation, influence and change among individuals and groups – and how empowerment can be understood and applied in both research and interventions.

Empowerment as a research and intervention perspective

You will develop the skills to use empowerment as a perspective in the development of health and social policy initiatives, as well as in research. The course strengthens your ability to analyse and reflect on how initiatives can support active participation and genuine citizenship.

Theoretical perspectives and societal conditions

You will gain insight into how empowerment is understood and used within the social sciences and health disciplines. The course also highlights the social structures and political frameworks that shape the possibilities for empowerment – both at an individual level and within communities. You will learn to analyse how power, inequality and systemic conditions influence the development and evaluation of health and social policy initiatives.

Overall aim and content of the course

The course introduces empowerment as an interdisciplinary concept and an analytical tool. You will acquire knowledge of theories and concepts, gain insight into the role of social and political structures, and learn to apply the empowerment perspective in both research and interventions within health and societal contexts.
