Professor focusing on osteoporosis, breast and prostate cancer
Kent Søe has been appointed professor of cell biology and bone pathology at the Department of Clinical Pathology, Odense University Hospital (OUH), and the Research Unit for Pathology at the Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark.
The aim is to do this by integrating new diagnostic approaches into pathology, biomarkers as well as genetics and epigenetics. Active involvement of patients and relatives in this research and in the research unit in general will also be a focus point. From 2006 onwards, Kent Søe has specialized in cell biology research with bone cells from both healthy people and patients – especially the bone-degrading cells, osteoclasts. But he has also initiated several clinical trials focusing on patients with osteoporosis as well as breast and prostate cancer patients with metastases in bone. This particular area of research will be his continued focus in the professorship.
Kent Søe graduated as a biologist from Aarhus University in 1998, after which he, his child and wife moved to Jena in Germany. In 2002, he defended his PhD thesis in biochemistry at the Department of Biochemistry, Institute of Molecular Biotechnology and Friedrich Schiller University under the supervision of Prof. Frank Groβe. Subsequently, he was employed by Prof. Groβe as a researcher and lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry, where he headed his own research group while also being responsible for teaching biochemistry students at the university. From 1998 to 2006, Kent's research focused on how the cells of the body repair damage to our genetic material to prevent disease.
In 2006, Kent returned to Denmark with his wife and two children, where he was employed as a senior researcher in the Department of Clinical Cell Biology at Vejle Hospital headed by Professor Jean-Marie Delaissé. Kent Søe worked at Vejle Hospital from 2006 to 2018.
During this time he also became assistant professor in 2012 and associate professor at the Department of Regional Health Research at SDU in 2014. In 2019, he was appointed associate professor at the Department of Clinical Pathology, OUH, and Research Unit for Pathology at the Department of Clinical Research, SDU, and since 2021 he has also held the role as Head of Research in the Research Unit.
Kent Søe will hold a 90% university position as professor and a 10% clinical position with diagnostic tasks. In addition to his research commitments, he will also continue the role as of Head of Research at the Research Unit for Pathology, at OUH and SDU.
Kent Søe is 51 years old and grew up in the Vejle area, more specifically in the small village, Skærup.
