Frank Kjeldsen is professor and group leader in the Protein Research group. My research is focused on understanding the interplay between nanoparticles and biological systems. By applying deep proteome analysis, the group has become expert in assessing the dynamics of cellular responses to nanoparticle exposure, including events like protein oxidation, initiation of antioxidant defense, and adaption of metabolism. These studies are complemented by integration of metabolomics, and bioimaging. We are currently determined to develop a dedicated proteomics platform for fast and large-scale proteome analyses, facilitating expansion of this line of research to study synergetic effects in cells/organisms exposed to multiple nanoparticles and contaminants. My group is also developing novel methods in mass spectrometry and chemical biology to advance our capability to analyze biological samples. A special interest is advancing proteomics by utilization of the negative ion mode as a complement to the positive ion mode, including fundamental understanding of gas-phase peptide chemistry in relation to their fragmentation.
