Dr Owens was Chair of the Biomedical Review Committee for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada from 2001 to 2007, and was a member of the MS Society Medical Advisory Committee from 2007-2019. He has served on NIH and Canadian Institutes of Health Research study sections, reviews grants for many European agencies and was a member of the Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience Committee for the Wellcome Trust from 2008-2013. He was Treasurer and then Secretary/Treasurer of the International Society for Neuroimmunology from 2001-2010. He is member of the Editorial Boards of Glia and the Scandinavian Journal of Immunology. Dr Owens was Chair of an EU/ESF COST Action 'Inflammation in Brain Disease NEURINFNET' (BM0603) from 2007 - 2011.
Professor Owens was President of the Scandinavian Society for Immunology from 2016-2020.
