New adjunct professor at Department of Clinical Research

Professor Kathleen Seidel has been appointed adjunct professor at Department of Neurosurgery, Odense University Hospital and Department of Clinical Research, University of Southern Denmark

Kathleen Seidel is a pioneer in intraoperative neurophysiology, and she has established the unit of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring at the Department of Neurosurgery and Orthopedics at the University Hospital Bern, Switzerland.

Nowadays, the Intraoperative Neuromonitoring Unit in Bern is hosting national and international observers, and Kathleen Seidel is often invited as speaker at intraoperative neuromonitoring courses, and in national and international conferences. In addition, she plays an active part in the International Society of Intraoperative Neurophysiology ISIN.

Intraoperative neurophysiology often allows the neurosurgeon to operate more safely close to important functional brain areas without having to perform awake neurosurgery. In essence, the use of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is recognized as an important part in the neurosurgical tool-box for eloquent and near-eloquent brain tumors, vascular (surgical or endovascular) procedures and brain stem/spinal cord surgical procedures.

A strengthening of Neurosurgical Research

The technique has been introduced and established at Department of Neurosurgery in close collaboration with Department of Neurophysiology, Odense University Hospital. However, intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is highly complex and includes a variety of pitfalls.

As Kathleen Seidler is both a skilled neurosurgeon and a trained neurophysiologist, she will be an extraordinary help, teacher and mentor for the further development of this technique into our everyday neurosurgical practice in Odense and in Denmark.

Kathleen Seidel is a successful researcher and she has published extensively within the field of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.
