THEME: Oral group exams - example 3

An example of an oral group exams - Political science - Political Theory (10 ECTS)

Exam

The exam is conducted as a group exam with 4-5 students per group. The group composition is randomized on the day of the examination after a prior registration of the students. In the examination room, the group draws one of the cases that they have worked on during the semester's practice lessons. Each group is divided into two with 2-3 students in each group.

One group gets the task of arguing for the case, while the other group gets the task of arguing against the same case. Initially, each student gets three minutes to present an argument/perspective either for or against the case. When everyone has had their individual presentaions, the entire group conducts a debate of approx. 30 minutes about the case. After the debate, the students leave the room so that the examiner and censor can vote before giving each individual student a grade.

The grade is assigned to each individual student without the other students being in the same room. The entire examination lasts 60 minutes in total, incl. voting (with five students, 10 minutes are added to the examination time). An individual grade (on the 7-point grading scale) is given to each individual student. The re-exam takes the same form as the ordinary exam. If only one student is to re-exam, the examiner will act as a debate/discussion partner. At the same time, the exam time is reduced to 20 minutes. At two students, they discuss with each other. At the same time, the exam time is reduced to 35 minutes. At three students, one student will discuss with two. At the same time, the exam time is reduced to 50 minutes.

Teaching and working formats

The teaching takes the form of presentations by the teacher and practical exercises. The teaching is to a large extent based on the students' active participation and on the premise that throughout the semester there is a connection between teaching and practice methods and the final exam form. The course consists of a combination of lectures and practice lessons conducted by instructors. The teaching is organized in such a way that it supports the pedagogical framework for teaching and training at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences. The basic principle is activating learning and activating teaching, which uses all four learning spaces in the pedagogical activity model for the humanities and social sciences.
