An example of an oral group exams - Cand. Negot. Oral Communication 2

Exam

An oral exam with 2-3 participants is administered.

The exam groups are formed by the teacher. The exam is conducted as:

a) a presentation (4-5 min.) from each of the participants based on a text in the foreign language (approx. 1-2 normal pages), which is handed out to each of the participants at the beginning of the preparation time, followed by:
b) a communication situation between the participants, as indicated by the exam question. The student must explain the characteristics of the communication situation in question, and associated discourse features. In addition, questions about English pronunciation and intonation may be subject to examination.

Teaching and work formats

The teaching and learning activities in the course takes the form of presentations by the teacher and students as well as practical exercises etc. and is largely based on the students' active participation. The course consists of a combination of lectures, group teaching, discussions, student presentations and written exercises. The teaching is organized in such a way that it supports the humanities model for activating learning and activating teaching, cf. the curriculum section on Didactic, pedagogical basis and contact with the research environment. Teaching in the discipline activates the student in the following teaching /study spaces:

  • Teaching spaces where the teacher has the responsibility for planning and is present
  • Study spaces where the teacher has the responsibility for planning, but is not present
  • Teaching spaces where the teacher is present, but students have the responsibility for planning for specific sub-activities
  • Study spaces where students have the responsibility for planning and the teacher is not present

Learning objectives:

Knowledge
The student must acquire knowledge of:
  • the pragmatic functions of the reviewed discourse types and their grammatical, stylistic, lexical and structural features as well as language learning theory, where it is relevant for understanding and using the reviewed discourse types
  • sound systems in English, incl. knowledge of pronunciation and sounds that may be difficult for students studying English as a foreign language
  • phonetic signs and phonetic transcription where relevant as support for pronunciation
  • relevant rhetorical techniques, including e.g. presentation and persuasion strategies.

Skills
After completing the course, the student must:

  • in nuanced, correct and fluent English, act linguistically adequately in more complex communication situations of professional relevance to the language area, such as e.g. business meetings, company and product presentations, interviews, problem solving and decision making,
  • be able to guide and instruct others,
  • be able to use persuasive strategies.

Competences
The student must, by utilizing his knowledge and skills, be able to

  • communicate effectively and linguistically correctly in business-related situations such as interviews, presentations, meetings and case-solving, including taking responsibility for planning, preparation and  holding oral presentations
  • support others in participating orally in business-related situations in order to arrive at decisions and solutions
  • independently evaluate own and others' oral presentations in relation to the linguistic and communicative tools used.
