EFFICACY - An effective colorectal cancer‐screening program based on novel dual‐mode wireless endoscopic capsules

Back ground

Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the world. Colon cancer can be extensively avoided by removing precursors to cancer. Therefore can early screening and detection plays a fundamental role in the reduction of mortality rate.

Number of polyps and size are important independent risk factors for developing colon cancer. The challenge is that only few people at risk are screened comprehensively and safely to find indicator polyps due to screening methods (traditional endoscopy) suffering from shortcomings in diagnostic accuracy and patient acceptance.

The aim of the project

The overall aim of “EFFICACY” is to rethink the current colorectal cancerscreening program by introducing video capsule endoscopy (VCE) for screening and thereby gaining increased inclusion in the screening program and reducing mortality in the target group of colon cancer screening.

This project wants to develop a novel intelligent camera pill that improves the accuracy of the screening and reduces the complication rate.

Parallel with the technological research, a clinical study is conducted in which 3,000 patients are screened with VCE (the world's largest clinical VCE study to date). This study is necessary to provide sufficient evidence in order to introduce VCE as part of the national screening program.

The project outcome

  • Development a new intelligent camera pill.
  • Provide clinical evidence of the superiority of the new screening method
