Organizational Barriers to the Implementation of Drones

Project objective

There remain numerous barriers to be broken down before we are ready to implement drone technology as an effective tool for businesses and organisations. This project will investigate what barriers stand in the way of drone technology implementation in large organisations. Should we open up for the full potential of drone technology?

In response to the above, the project will investigate what routines and structures prevent businesses and organisations from fully embracing the technology.

OBID will investigate obstacles to the implementation of drone technology in large organisations. Drone technology is dependent on large organisations to be able to realise its full potential. Technical implementability and cost-effectiveness are not enough on their own.

The integration of drones in organisations needs flexible decision-making processes. Progressing beyond trials and routine use can be blocked by barriers in organisations, or between organisations and the contractors operating drones.

Through the use of a series of case studies, the project will therefore identify how existing routines, structures, standards and competences prevent organisations from fully embracing the technology. OBID does not only intend to make organisations aware of the barriers they erect themselves to innovation, but will also investigate ways of overcoming them and help drone manufacturers and service providers to predict and overcome such barriers.

Project outcome

Multiple stakeholders will benefit from the project's results:

·         Faster, cheaper leak-detection activated by drone sensor technology to the benefit of project partner HOFOR, City of Copenhagen, the city's population and the environment.

·         Large organisations that will be able to benefit from drone sensor technology will be able to overcome internal barriers and thus realise increases in efficiency.

·         Drone operators and developers will be able to adapt their marketing strategies with regard to winning important, large customers.

·         The removal of barriers will help the technology to integrate into society, creating innovation and jobs.
