Technologies for autonomous drones - Free the Drones

Today drones must stay within visual contact of the pilot.

Enabling drones to fly BVLOS is essential for unlocking their potential within agriculture, horticulture, environment enforcement etc.

Autonomous flying drones that can navigate safely and freely around obstacles is key.

SDU UAS Center is lead partner in research project Free the Drones (FreeD) investigating different aspects of BVLOS technologies such as:

  • Reliable communications
  • Failsafe Hardware and Software
  • Detect and avoid systems using bio-inspired echolocation from bats and optical flow from insects.

FreeD project is supported by Innovation Fund Denmark and is co-financed by partners. Total budget is 19.4 million DKK.
