The Department of Technology and Innovation at the University of Southern Denmark has welcomed a new head.

His name is Jeroen Bergmann, he is originally from the Netherlands, but has for many years been living in England and joins us directly from a  position at the University of Oxford.

And he is looking forward to getting started at the University of Southern Denmark’s campus in Odense, where he officially took office on January 1, 2024.

- I am really  looking forward to working with the fantastic researchers, students, and support staff at SDU, he says.

- SDU is a relatively young university that has pushed the boundaries in terms of global solutions. Its entrepreneurial spirit and technical prowess makes it a great institution for innovative academic endeavours.

Work across disciplines

Jeroen Bergmann succeeds the former head of department, Peder Thusgaard Ruhoff, who has taken up the position as head of TEK Economy.

Previously, Jeroen Bergmann studied in London, Amsterdam, and Oxford, and besides the university in Oxford, he has been affiliated with prestigious academic institutions such as King’s College London, Imperial College London, MIT, and Harvard.

His research has primarily been at the intersection between technology and healthcare. In addition, he is the founder of the company Reg Metrics, which assists developers and inventors of new medical equipment in navigating European laws and regulations.

It is precisely the ability to work across disciplines that makes Jeroen Bergmann the perfect candidate for the job, says Henrik Bindslev, dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

Jeroen Bergmann is an incredibly skilled and successful researcher and research leader, who comes directly from one of the absolute top universities in Europe, namely Oxford. Jeroen is a good match for the Department of Technology and Innovation because his expertise is not so much one specific technology, but rather thinking innovation, entrepreneurship, and creativity across various technological areas, says Henrik Bindslev.

Jeroen Bergmann has just moved from Oxford to Odense with his family.

- It is going to be a great adventure for the kids, says the new head of department.

- They have already started to learn a few words in Danish.
