PhD Seminar: Philosophical Hermeneutics and Phenomenology

Read more about the Conference

Seminar description

Where are philosophical hermeneutics and phenomenology in the 21st century, and where are they going? Contemporary research within hermeneutics and phenomenology are to a great extent conducted by taking recourse to tradition and authority. Today’s hermeneuticians and phenomenologists lose themselves in minutiae, justify their specialized positions by drawing out perspectives from the authorities in the fields and avoid the systematic questions. Where are hermeneutics and phenomenology today? What are their prospects and potential? What is their raison d’être? The goal of the conference is to gain a clearer systematic view of these questions. We encourage the participants to share their vision of the futures of these disciplines. What we are less interested in is historical exegesis of figures in the history of hermeneutics and phenomenology. Contributions could revolve around the following questions:

  • What are the pertinent questions and problems of hermeneutics and phenomenology today?
  • What is the relation between hermeneutics and phenomenology from a systematic perspective?
  • What should a manifesto for the future of these disciplines look like?
  • What is the systematic contribution of hermeneutics and phenomenology respectively to contemporary philosophy?

Keynote speakers:

Kristin Gjesdal received her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oslo. Her scholarship covers e.g.: Hermeneutics, Phenomenology, theories of interpretation among many other things. Gjesdal currently works on two book-length projects: “Unruly Women: Romantics, Feminists, Revolutionaries” & “The Imperative of Interpretation: Herder, Schleiermacher, Staël” and will be giving a keynote talk on the present and future of Hermeneutics.

Dermot Moran received his PhD from Yale University. Moran has worked extensively on phenomenology, medieval philosophy, philosophy of mind among many other topics. Moran currently works on researching the phenomenology of embodiment and the evolution of the concepts of self and personhood in Western philosophy and will be delieving a keynote talk on the present and future of Phenomenology.

Abstracts for the keynote presentations will follow at a later point.

This event is both a conference and a course, and there are consequently two different ways in which PhD students can participate. 1) Attendance + presentation. There are four time slots reserved for presentations (approximately 30 minutes) and extended feedback and Q&A (approximately 15 minutes) from PhD students. PhD students who present will get 1,5 ECTS for the course. 2) Attendance. PhD students, who participate without giving presentations, will get 1 ECTS for actively attending and participating in the conference.

Please note, that submission of abstract does not necessarily guarantee the opportunity to present at the conference due to the limited time slots. Presentations that fit the theme of the conference will be given priority when the program is finalized.
