Application process in Esbjerg

You should apply for housing soon after your application to SDU, even if you are not sure of being offered a place.

Bachelor and master’s students can apply for accommodation 3 days after they have submitted the application for their study programme. If you are not offered a place, your application for Student Housing will be cancelled automatically.

To be guaranteed Student Housing you must apply before the deadline:

  • September admission: 1 May
  • February admission: 1 November

You apply for Student Housing by filling out an online application form at sduhousing.sdu.dk.

You will not receive an offer of Student Housing until you have received your official acceptance letter from SDU.

We begin sending out offers from 1 June for the autumn semester and from 1 November for the spring semester. The offer will be sent by email from the Accommodation Office.

If you have been offered a place on a study programme at SDU, but you have not received an offer of accommodation within 2 weeks after you have received your acceptance letter, please contact the Accommodation Office at boligesbjerg@sdu.dk

In the email with the offer of Student Housing, you will find a link, which you use to accept or decline the offer. You have 7 days to accept the offer of housing.

If you do not accept the offer before the deadline, or if you decline the offer, the offer will be cancelled and you cannot expect to receive another offer.

Within a few days of accepting the housing offer, you will receive an email with a Welcome Letter.

In this letter, you can find information about:

  • Your accommodation
  • Payment Contract
  • Arrival
  • Termination notice
  • Moving out inspection

It is important that you read this letter carefully. If you miss a deadline for signing the contract or paying the deposit, you risk losing your Student Housing and we will not necessarily be able to offer you anything else.

You pay rent from the day your accommodation is available. It may be as early as 15 August/15 January. If your room is available from 15 August, you pay rent from 15 August even if you do not arrive until 25 August, for instance, or some other day after 15 August.

You are asked to pay:

  • By way of a payment slip (in Danish: girokort) enclosed with your tenancy agreement. You can pay the payment slip at the post office or the bank.
  • By way of bank transfer. The information will be enclosed with your tenancy agreement.

If you would prefer to pay the deposit and the first month’s rent before you come to Denmark, you will receive information on how to do so when you receive information on your accommodation. If you plan to pay your rent with a credit card when you arrive, you should be aware that most credit cards have a maximum amount that you can withdraw per month and sometimes also per day.

FAQ

The guarantee for accommodation applies once only. If you decide to extend your stay, you will either need to keep your accommodation or give it up and find something new on your own.

If you leave Denmark for a period (e.g. sabbatical leave, internship or exchange stay), we cannot guarantee new accommodation for you when you return to Denmark.

We will, of course, try to help you as best we can.

If you are a returning student, please do not apply via the online application portal. Instead, you should write an email to boligesbjerg@sdu.dk. Please state why you need accommodation, when you need it and how much you can pay each month, including utilities.

If we find accommodation for you, please note that you cannot expect to get a room before 15 February for the spring semester. Many students have exams until the end of January and will not vacate the rooms before then. Due to this overlap, we will probably not be able to offer you accommodation before 1 February.

Yes, you are welcome to put in a request if you know which of our housing options you would prefer. However, we cannot guarantee you’ll be offered your requested accommodation.

You can state your request in the ‘General comments’ section when you fill out your application.

All rooms have a bed, desk, drawer or wardrobe, and lighting. All rooms have access to laundry facilities.

All kitchens have a refrigerator and stove. Master’s students receive a linen package with pillow, duvet, bed sheets, towels, etc. Exchange students will be provided with a pillow and duvet.

If you make an international transfer in foreign currency, it is your responsibility to make sure that you cover all fees and that your payment will cover the amount in Danish Kroner (DKK). The fee for changing currency varies from bank to bank. If you stay in Denmark for more than a semester, you could consider opening a Danish bank account.

Generally, your accommodation is yours until you give written notice to the Accommodation Office of SDU. You can find the termination notice of tenancy agreement right here: Download Termination notice of tenancy agreement .

A few students have a time limited tenancy agreement and do not have to give notice. The notice varies but can be as much as 3 months. It is usually only possible to give notice on the 1st or the 15th of the month. So, if you have 3 months’ notice, the following applies:

If you wish to stay in your room until 1 July, you must give notice 15 April because you pay rent 14 days after you move out. The 14 days are needed to prepare the room for the next tenant. This is also true for Danish tenants.

Students renting from a private landlord or subletting have individual terms.

Before you leave your accommodation, the janitor or landlord (in Danish: portner/vicevært) must inspect your room to check that nothing has been damaged or needs painting or cleaning. It is important that you clean the room carefully, otherwise you will be charged for cleaning. You should expect to pay for the room to be painted after you leave. The expenses of preparing the room for the next tenant will be subtracted from your deposit.

If for some reason your accommodation is not satisfactory on arrival, you should make sure to report it to us, the Accommodation Office, via email boligesbjerg@sdu.dk or the janitor within a few days so that you will not be charged for anything when you leave.

Take pictures of the items and email them along with a description to your housing company, with us as cc (boligesbjerg@sdu.dk). In this way you will not be held responsible for these damages at the end of your renting period.

You should hand in the key to your room to the Accommodation Office when you leave.

If the keys have not been handed in, a new lock must be put in at your expense, as you cannot have access to a room that is no longer yours.
