English – the main language of a globalised world

What is English? Is it a single language spoken by large populations across the globe in many national, regional, and local varieties? Or is it a lingua franca – a collection of related forms with shared foundations, used in vastly different cultural and social contexts?

Similar questions arise when we examine literature written in English and the historical and cultural development of English-speaking nations and communities worldwide.

What you gain from an MA in English Studies

English Studies is a two-year, full-time Master’s programme designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to explore such questions in depth. You will broaden your understanding of the English-speaking world and its cultures while developing strong theoretical, methodological, and communicative competencies.

The programme prepares you to communicate complex knowledge to non-specialist audiences and to apply your expertise in a wide range of professional contexts, including education, cultural and knowledge-based industries, public institutions, NGOs, and the private sector.

You will be introduced to key concepts and research practices within the humanities, with particular emphasis on the three core disciplines of English Studies at SDU: literature, history, and culture. Each discipline also includes a practical component, designed to support project-oriented learning and enhance employability after graduation.

Shape your professional profile during your studies

In the first and second semesters, you can choose from a wide range of elective courses that reflect the research strengths of the faculty. Teaching focuses on theoretical, methodological, and practical approaches to the study of English language, literature, history, and culture.

In the third semester, you have the opportunity to study abroad at a European or American university. The fourth semester is dedicated to writing your Master’s thesis.
