Are you in doubt?

It's completely normal to be uncertain when choosing a master's program.

Every year, we talk to many prospective master's students about their considerations. Here, we have gathered some of the questions we most frequently receive.

  • Choosing what to study is a big decision. You have probably put a lot of thought into it. Doubt often appears because you care about your choice and about what you want – at least right now.

    Accept that you are not 100% certain

    You cannot know what studying is like until you have tried it. You only find out whether it feels right once you begin.

    Doubt may follow you when you submit your application, when you accept your place and during your studies. It takes curiosity and patience to see your choice unfold. It will likely be different from what you imagined. For most students, it is.

    Talk about your doubts. Talk to your family, your friends or a student counsellor. When you put your thoughts into words, they make more sense than when they stay in your head.

    Remember: it often takes one or two semesters before you feel sure that you are in the right place.

    But what if I am fairly sure I made the wrong choice?

    You likely did thorough research before submitting your application. If that research pointed you towards this programme, trust that process.

    If you have discovered something new since applying, say it out loud and talk to someone about it.

  • That is understandable. Our programme is not professionally oriented. We do not train you for one specific job. Instead, you develop skills that you can use in many different roles and sectors.

    The world is constantly changing. We cannot predict future needs. People contribute to the world’s challenges, but we are also part of the solutions. That is why there will always be a need for knowledge of design, culture, history, values, ethics, language and communication.

    You are therefore not trained for a single, fixed career path. Instead, you explore what you find interesting, important and meaningful. You graduate with skills that prepare you to address complex challenges in the future – whatever they may look like.

  • Some students choose to leave because they realise they want to pursue something else. For most, it is not about dropping out, but about choosing a different path. Many later feel confident that it was the right decision.

    We respect students who decide to change direction. At the same time, we encourage you to give yourself the chance to begin and get to know the programme properly before making a final decision.

Often asked questions

  • Traditionally, it was almost automatic to go from a bachelor’s degree to a master’s degree, but things are different now.  Today, there are thousands of paths to a good academic career. So the most important thing is that you assimilate what you have learned during your education and focus on what you would like to learn next. 

    So start a master’s programme if you really want to learn what the master’s programme gives you the opportunity to learn. If instead you want to test yourself on the job market after your bachelor’s degree, that is also a good way to go. It helps you clarify what you already can and can’t do. You can always return to us and take a master’s degree or further education at a later date. 

    The most important thing is that you make a choice that makes sense for you.
  • Although SDU is a huge place with 25,000 students, our study programmes and classes are often smaller than you will find in other places.
    SDU is a diverse and inclusive university where there is room for everyone. Our students come from all over the country and from all kinds of backgrounds. You will feel comfortable here, even if you grew up in a home without a bookshelf.

    We stand out for being a ‘hands on’ university with a focus on innovation. In this way, we challenge the conventional ways of teaching and collaborating with our students.

  • At university, you decide many things yourself. Including whether you want to move to your city of study. But there are plenty of good reasons to live in the city where you’re studying, even if right now a commuter life seems more attractive than moving. Studying also gives you the opportunity to seize new opportunities – to take a local, relevant student job, to create networks in your study city, to get involved in associations and committees at your university and much more.

    Commuting is not without costs. We know that students who choose to live far away from their study city find it difficult to maintain their attachment to daily student life. Commuter life requires strict prioritisation, and the time you spend on transport, you don’t have to relax, have fun with your friends or perhaps for fun leisure activities.

    Some students commute for a period, but in the long term it wears them down. Fortunately, it is fairly easy to get your hands on student accommodation in SDU’s study cities.
