Supplementary courses

If you are missing one or more required subjects or levels, you may be able to qualify for admission by completing supplementary courses.

Supplementary courses can help you meet subject requirements, but they cannot improve your grade point average (GPA).

Overview

How it works

Below you can see when supplementary courses are relevant, how to register them in your application, and what rules and deadlines you must follow as an international applicant.

Supplementary courses are relevant if you:

  • are missing one or more required subjects.
  • need to improve your level of a certain subject.

Supplementary courses can only be used to meet the programme-specific subject requirements. They cannot compensate for language documentation or educational qualifications.

EU/EE applicants

If you take your supplementary course to improve the level of a subject, you must complete the course and upload your certificate to optagelse.dk. If you complete your supplementary course after 5 July at 12 noon (CET) you must upload your documentation via SDU's self-service system, sdu.dk/admission by 31 August at 12 noon (CET).

Non-EU/non-EEAapplicants

If you take your supplementary course to improve the level of a subject, you must complete the course and upload your certificate to optagelse.dk by 5 July at 12 noon (CET).

When you submit your application to optagelse.dk you must state which subject(s) and level(s) you are supplementing.

You do not have to be enrolled in the supplementary course or upload documentation at the time of application, as long as you upload the final course certificate once the course is completed.

EU/EEA applicants

When you submit your application to optagelse.dk you must indicate whether you will complete the course before or after 5 July. If you upload your course certificate  to optagelse.dk by 5 July at 12 noon (CET), your supplementary course is included in the assessment of your application to SDU.

If you have not finished the course or uploaded the certificate by 5 July, any offer of admission to SDU will be conditional on you passing the supplementary course(s) by 31 August. You must upload the course certificate to SDU's self-service system sdu.dk/admission by 31 August.

Non-EU/non-EEA applicants

If you are from a country outside of the EU/ EEA, you must have finished your supplementary courses before 5 July and upload your certificate to optagelse.dk by 5 July at 12 noon (CET).

If your application is missing documentation after 5 July, it cannot be processed.

Some programmes have stricter rules for supplementary courses, including:

  • Medicine
  • Clinical Biomechanics
  • Psychology

If you wish to apply for one of these bachelor's programmes, you can only supplement one level in a single subject after 5 July.

If you need more than one supplementary course, you must have finished all but one before 5 July.

However, if you apply for study start in February, you can follow more supplementary courses for both Clinical Biomechanics and Medicine with master's programme in Odense. For winter start, you must send the course certificate by 31 January to optag@sdu.dk.

In Denmark, supplementary courses are typically offered as:

  • upper secondary level courses
  • HF single-subject courses

You can find information about available subjects, course duration, application procedures, and fees at:

  • ug.dk
  • the local VUC (education for adults)

If you are taking supplementary courses in another country, remember to make sure that the course is equivalent to the required Danish subject and level.

Below you will find a list of approved supplementary courses for bachelor´s admission at SDU. We reserve the right to change and update courses up to each intake.

Courses must be finished with an exam and diploma granted. The diploma must contain the overall achieved passing grade.

Supplementary courses are not necessarily the only option if your qualifications do not meet the admission requirements.

If you already have qualifications equivalent to a required subject or level, you have two options:

  1. You may be able to have your qualifications recognised through an Individual Competency Assessment (IKV) via a Danish adult education centre (VUC).
  2. You can apply for exemption from required subjects because of equivalent academic knowledge.
