What does the programme lead to?

Mosts physicists work in research and development, but physicists have skills that are demanded by many different businesses.

Industry

Most industrial physicists work in IT, telecommunications and related industries. However, a Physics degree can also lead to careers in finance, the energy industry, and various consultancies.

Government

Government agencies hire physicists to conduct research, work in regulatory affairs and public policy, or almost any other area that requires workers with scientific training.

Danish government agencies are located across the country, although the highest concentration is in the Copenhagen area.

Healthcare

While they are unable to advise on medical treatment, physicists are often employed within areas such as radiology, radiation oncology and nuclear medicine, in order to design, test and approve new medical technologies and equipment.

Research

Research can be conducted in many different ways. For instance, you could be based at a university, combining research with teaching; or in a public-sector research centre, helping to ensure national provisions keep pace with new discoveries.

Typically, a career in academic research will require a PhD degree.

Entrepreneurial career

Some physicists opt to start their own company. Being an entrepreneur requires understanding the business side of science and learning a completely new language of business plans, marketing, advertising, competitive intelligence, market analysis, cash flow, taxes, applicable regulations, intellectual property protection, financing, and much more.

What exactly makes you particularly attractive in the job market if you take a Master's degree in Physics? To a potential future employer, you are your competencies. Therefore, we here give you an overview of the competences that the programme gives you:

  • With a Master’s degree from the Faculty of Science at SDU, you will be able to:

    • independently apply the theories and methods of one or more subject areas as well as engage with subject matters and methods within the field of research of said subject area
    • plan and conduct scientific projects at a high academic level
    • explain hypotheses from a qualified theoretical background and be critical towards your own and others’ research results and scientific models
    • initiate and carry out academic and biological related interdisciplinary collaboration and take responsibility for your  own academic development and specialisations
    • communicate research-based knowledge and discuss professional and scientific problems with both peers and non-specialists

  • As a graduate with a Master's degree in Physics you have:

    • knowledge of basic theoretical concepts and experimental methods based on research at the highest international level within the field of physics
    • knowledge of topics within the physics research practiced by the staff at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy
    • expert knowledge in a defined field of research pertaining to the subject area of physics

    You can:

    • compile a mathematical description of a given physical problem on the basis of the laws of physics, in order to solve it quantitatively
    • use computer simulations as a scientific research tool
    • solve scientific problems by using a combination of theory, numerical simulation and experiments
    • verify the validity of proposed hypotheses by designing and performing experiments and/or applying theoretical models
    • investigate concrete phenomena theoretically and/or experimentally and thus contribute to generating new scientific insights and to creating new practical applications of physics research

    With the international dimension of the programme, you acquire competencies to handle professional and personal relationships in non-Danish cultural contexts and to understand that the approach to the key matters and methods of Physics is independent of national boundaries.
