Admission and requirements

Learn more about who can be admitted to Syddansk Elite and how the admission process works.

In order to be admitted to Syddansk Elite, you must fulfil the following criteria:

  1. Your elite sport takes up a significant part of your schedule.
  2. You must be an elite athlete, coach or referee.
  3. You must be admitted or apply for admission to the University of Southern Denmark.

How do I apply for admission to Syddansk Elite?

The application to Syddansk Elite is separate from the application to the University of Southern Denmark and must be submitted by filling out and sending the application form below to elite@sdu.dk.

You can apply on an ongoing basis, and you are welcome to contact us even before applying to the University of Southern Denmark to learn more about your options for affiliation and support.

Documentation of Athletic Level

In order for us to assess your application, it is a requirement that you attach documentation of your athletic level. The documentation may, for example, include a contract (or relevant parts thereof), a statement from your coach, a team lineup, or other relevant documentation that describes your level and your athletic affiliation.

Who can apply?

  • As a general rule, applicants in football (soccer), handball, volleyball, badminton, basketball and ice hockey must play at least at the highest level to be accepted.

    If you are a second-tier footballer with a part-time or full-time professional contract and at least three mandatory daytime training sessions (08:00–17:00) per week, you are also eligible.

  • In other sports, you must compete at national team or high international level. You may also be accepted if you have been part of the national youth team at the highest level in your sport within the past two years.

  • It can be difficult to assess your own level based on the above criteria. Therefore, we recommend that you submit an application if you are in doubt. All applications are assessed individually.

  • Syddansk Elite makes it possible to pursue an education even if you live abroad because of your sport. However, your options may depend on the programme you want to apply for, as many of our programmes require physical attendance to pass.

    Physical attendance in class

    As programmes differ in their forms of examination, it is recommended that you read the programme regulations and requirements carefully before applying. You can also contact an elite advisor at Syddansk Elite.

    Sports, Medicine and Clinical Biomechanics are some of the programmes that present challenges when living abroad. We seldom recommend that elite sports students start these programmes from abroad, as the first year requires substantial on-campus attendance for which exemptions are difficult to obtain.

    However, that doesn’t mean you should give up hope if you live abroad and are interested in any of the above programmes. Contact an elite advisor at Syddansk Elite – we’ll discuss your options and try to find a solution.

    A student assistant can help you

    When residing abroad, it goes without saying that you are unable to attend the lectures on campus. Therefore, you have the option to be assigned a student assistant. Read more about what a student assistant can help you with.

    Examinations

    Elite sports students living abroad have the opportunity to apply to take their exams abroad. However, it may vary from programme to programme whether this is approved.
