Media

Our group fosters collective thinking on media practices in everyday life and as cultural formations. We understand media as forces that shape existential experience as well as wider social, political, and economic processes.

About Media

The Media research group is a space for collective thinking about media practices and existential media in a world where media permeate everyday life and shape culture, politics, and the economy on a global scale.

Our research is grounded in the understanding that media are not merely products of society or technology, but active forces and situated practices that co-shape social reality and existential conditions such as identity, temporality, intimacy, and belonging. We combine forward-looking perspectives with historically informed analyses of media materiality, sociality, and practices, and provide strong theoretical contributions through critical engagement with the evolving landscape of modern communication.

The group examines the dynamic trajectories of media industries and their cultural fields alongside the everyday practices through which diverse groups engage, negotiate, and make meaning with media. We have strong expertise in contemporary media use, including insights into the needs and behaviours of diverse groups such as children, older people, and people with disadvantages.

We address major societal challenges, including AI, inequality, and climate change, and pioneer research on sustainability and the greening of media industries. Our overarching goal is to advance media research across applied and theoretical domains, to engage the public through critical media literacy, and to educate future media practitioners. The group combines broad scientific reach with a clear commitment to social engagement.
