The goal of the study was to analyse a few potential pathways for the production of sustainable jet fuel from biogas, and to analyse a case study of a such production plant on Funen, Denmark. The study analyses pathways through the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process, methanol synthesis and the oxidative coupling of methane, and several energy flow diagrams were constructed.

Based on this analysis, a low-temperature FT process with an iron-based catalyst was chosen for the case study. The price of the produced sustainable jet fuel required for the plant to become feasible was found to be 348.7 DKK/GJ when no subsidies are given in the production chain. That is roughly three and a half times as expensive as conventional jet fuel at a price of 98.7 DKK/GJ. As such, a gas-to-liquids plant based on this technology relies on a high willingness to pay for sustainable jet fuel, or subsidies on e.g. the biogas input to become feasible. With an expected willingness to pay of 250 DKK/GJ for sustainable jet fuel, the required subsidy on biogas for the plant to become feasible was found to be 40.5 DKK/GJ of biogas, which is well below the biogas subsidy given today.
