Denmark is rich in culture, history and traditions. You might have heard about the timeless fairy tales of Hans Christian Andersen, the fearsome Vikings, the Danish concept of hygge or the Danish emphasis on work-life balance.

A surprising variety of dialects, cultures and traditions

The Danish people take great pride in the cultural and regional characteristics that set them apart and which are particularly apparent in the food traditions and dialects of the different areas. For instance, the dialects of Southern Jutland, Funen and Copenhagen are quite distinct.

In Southern Jutland, you will encounter the traditional sønderjysk kaffebord, which involves tables groaning under the weight of various cakes and pastries. And the people of Funen are so invested in the local cake brunsviger that for an entire day every year bake-offs are held all over the island to find whose brunsviger is best. Why not come try for yourself?

“When I first arrived, I quickly realized how different everyday traditions can be. The first thing I noticed when coming to Denmark is how much Danish people love their flags. The flag has its own little cultural meaning for Danes actually, they use it to embrace community and to celebrate. So don't be surprised to get a flag on your birthday”

Danish holiday traditions

The Danes value their traditions, and below you can learn more about some of the most cherished holiday traditions in Denmark.

"Moving from Portugal to Denmark has definitely been a cultural shock - a great one! I expected colder people, but instead I found warm people in a cold weather. I expected challenges in the transition process, but instead I found help from institutions, organisations and individuals. I expected lonely study days, but instead I found study communities and an amazing life. I expected a civilized  and modern society and found exactly that."
