All courses at the Faculty of Science combine different teaching methods.

Lectures are given by professors on a weekly basis and are usually held with larger groups of students. The lectures are interactive and professors take the effort to design the speed and the content of the lectures according to the students' needs, interests and questions. Having a good ratio between students and teachers enables our professors to care for the learning development of every single student. 

Master-level practice and exercise sessions at the Faculty of Science are generally held by the professors themselves. The practice and exercise sessions often contain problem-solving tasks and adaptation of methods as we highly encourage our students to use the learned theoretical principles to create their own ideas and solutions. 

As part of each course, you will be asked to do certain assignments and projects; some individually and others in groups. Your participation, your personal commitment and you taking responsibility for your own learning process are the key factors here.

In general, the relationship between students and professors is more equal and straightforward in Denmark than what you might be used to. It might initially confuse or even frustrate you, but you will quickly come to appreciate it.

SDU Odense is the largest campus of the university. It is, in fact, the largest place of study in the entire Region of Southern Denmark. Most of the programmes offered by SDU are taught here, and the buildings at Campusvej 55 are home to around 22,600 students and 3,200 employees.

The campus area is located approx. 3 kilometres from the centre of Odense. About 20 % of the campus area is woodland, and we use as much energy as a city with 15,000 inhabitants.

In recent years, the Faculty of Science has invested huge amounts of money in state-of-the-art research facilities of international standard and good studying and working conditions:

• New laboratories at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Pharmacy
• New laboratories in connection with teaching rooms and common areas for Biology, Biomedicine and Biochemistry and molecular biology
• Newly renovated library with over 1,000 work stations for students

In your spare time, you can enjoy many different activities at SDU and enjoy facilities such as an athletics stadium, a public swimming pool, a gym, coffee bars, canteens and a bookshop.

With around 22,500 students under one roof, SDU Odense has a natural breeding ground for a rich association life. And if you skim the bulletin boards in the hallways, you will find that there are many communities of interest that you can become a part of.

Job opportunities during and after the study

Funen is home to one of Europe's largest clusters with over 100 tech and robot companies. Several of the companies have their origins in SDU’s research environments, and you will find that the university has an ambitious start-up environment where you can get help to put your idea on wings.

The National Board of Health and Welfare and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency are located in Odense. Here are several cultural institutions, biotech companies, a large university hospital, OUH, which is closely connected with SDU. It makes it possible to find a student job that is relevant to your study. And with the relatively low cost of studio housing, your SU goes further than in e.g. Aarhus and Copenhagen.

From the autumn of 2021, you can  jump on the city's newly built Light Rail, which runs from the city center to the university in 15 minutes. Or you can get wind in your cheeks with the bike on the municipality's 560 km bike path.
