What is Philosophical Dialogue?

Philosophical dialogue is an activity known from the tradition of 'Philosophy with Children' which is a collective term for various forms of group activities, where children develop their abilities for philosophical thinking and conversation.

Philosophical activities often begin with a story that contains ideas or values that offers potential for philosophical dialogue. The purpose is not to teach participants about philosophical thinkers or concepts, but to provide them the opportunity to engage in philosophy.  Philosophy with children is a growing field in many countries – both as a practice (eg in schools) and as a research area.

International research suggests that philosophical dialogues can improve children's cognitive skills. The activities involve seeing things from other perspectives, expressing views, working together, and engaging in focused investigations of concepts and values. Some argue that is will promote children's social skills, and, in addition, most agree that it is a fun activity.
