Applications for the Professional Master’s Programme in Clinical Nursing at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) have increased by 45%. This surge is primarily due to an innovative partnership agreement with several hospitals.

In an era of increasing demand for qualified healthcare personnel, SDU has collaborated with various hospitals to enhance the qualifications of nurses through a Professional Master's degree in Clinical Nursing. These partnerships have contributed to a notable rise in the number of applicants for the programme.

The positive trend is evident in the latest figures, showing a rise from 33 applicants in 2023 to 48 in 2024, marking a 45% increase. The majority of this surge is credited to the newly formed partnerships.

- We are incredibly proud of the significant progress in applications for our Professional Master's programme in Clinical Nursing, states Merete Munk, Head of Education and Secretariat at the Faculty of Health Sciences at SDU.

- Through these partnerships, we have established a model that not only addresses the urgent need for specialised nurses but also ensures the continuance of high-quality patient care, because the programme is directly tailored to the nurses' patient-oriented work.

Feedback from hospitals suggests that the majority of the 48 applicants in 2024 are a result of the partnerships. Nurses from Zealand University Hospital, Esbjerg and Grindsted Hospital, Southern Jutland Hospital, and Odense University Hospital have applied for the education in clinical nursing.

- This is clear evidence that when educational institutions and the healthcare sector collaborate, we can achieve outstanding results for both the healthcare system and our students.

Expansion of the Partnership Model

The partnership agreement for the Professional Master's Programme in Clinical Nursing is set to extend to most regional hospitals within the year. Moreover, plans are in place to broaden this model to other fields of study in the future.

In addition to Clinical Nursing, the Faculty of Health Sciences also offers professional master's programmes in midwifery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and the health sciences master's program.

Applications for programmes with available spaces for the autumn will open again on June 10th.

More information about the partnership agreement can be found here (information is in Danish)

What is a Professional Master's Programme

A Professional Master's is an extension of a bachelor's degree or a professional bachelor's degree just like a regular master's.

The difference is that the program extends over 4 years instead of 2, and the student is expected to work an average of 25 hours per week alongside their studies.
