Writing your thesis

This information comes from the Graduate School webpage “The PhD thesis”

  • Most SDU theses submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences consist of an overview and a series of manuscripts (unpublished scientific reports) and/or publications; both parts are evaluated by the assessment committee
  • A thesis based on a monograph is also possible
  • The manuscripts are usually published as journal articles or have been written for peer reviewed journals

Format of the thesis:

  • Usually written in Danish or English but must always include a summary in both Danish and English
  • SDU has a Word template for PhD theses to ensure the right layout, fonts, logo, and colours for figures, etc. The template is available directly in Word through the Templafy add-on.
  • Printing of the PhD thesis is by SDU's Graphic Center (Print & Sign)—they offer to help set up the thesis for printing; a standard SDU cover is used but you can choose the colour
  • Look at Graphic Center’s website before you start writing

The aim of the overview is to demonstrate the student’s ability:

  • To independently communicate the most important research results of the PhD project
  • To discuss these in relation to national and international literature, i.e. how the PhD project contributes to the scientific field
  • To reflect on the validity of the applied methods and results
  • To link the manuscripts/publications to the overall aim of the project.
