New flagship centre at SDU and OUH
The Centre for Integrated Multi-Omics in Precision Medicine (CIMP) has received the academic seal of approval from SDU and OUH as the new research flagship across the two institutions.
This followed a lengthy process involving patients, international researchers, SDU's and OUH's research councils and deans and directors from SDU and OUH. With the appointment, the centre will receive DKK 14 million for research over the next five years.
Many patients receive unnecessary treatment when they could instead discontinue it after a short period and recover without side effects.
Increased treatment burden leads to increased drug costs, and CIMP will focus on the biggest clinical barriers to reducing overtreatment in three key diseases – breast cancer, osteoporosis and multiple sclerosis – as a model for a concept that can be extended to other diseases.
Dean Ole Skøtt, Faculty of Health Sciences, emphasised that the project focuses on a very important issue for both individuals and society as a whole, and that it presents a number of advanced techniques to solve the problem.
Strengthened collaboration
SDU and OUH will be living under the same roof within a few years, and the flagship centres are one of several examples of the strengthened collaboration between SDU and OUH towards the upcoming merger in the new hospital building in Odense.
SDU and OUH flagship centres are interdisciplinary hubs for research and education, bringing researchers together across the two organisations to create better treatment methods, advanced technologies and improved patient care.
In October 2023, STEMBRACE was named as SDU and OUH's first flagship centre. The centre researches how stem cells can be used to rebuild damaged organs.
The flagship centres are funded for a five-year period with a total of DKK 14 million per centre with the option to extend for another five-year period with an additional DKK 14 million. OUH and SDU each fund 50 per cent.
– At SDU, we strive daily to produce the best to create value for and with society. With the flagship centres, we bring excellent research and treatment closer together and put even more focus on how we together with OUH can create groundbreaking results that make a difference for the society we serve, says Jens Ringsmose, rector of SDU.
