Urban agriculture is not a new phenomenon; however, it is now gaining increasing attention from urban dwellers and planners. The basic idea of urban farming is to reduce transportation related to food demands and to increase the arable areas thus increasing the number of people that our planet can feed.
We assess and compare the environmental performance of urban agriculture and products hereof with conventional agriculture and alternative uses (e.g. solar power generation) of the urban areas available for urban farming. This comparison facilitates the decision making related with allocation of urban for specific purposes.
