Call for papers

Objectives
The study and design of interaction between humans and socially intelligent robots is becoming a mature field, addressing all areas of human life, from children playing over workplace automation to healthcare. While the robot to human part of interaction is primarily addressing the body's visual, auditory and, to some extent tactile, systems, kinesthetic interaction is much less studied. Kinesthetic interaction is carried by the body's musculoskeletal, proprioceptive and vestibular systems, and is highly relevant in scenarios where humans engage with robots for physical assistance, physical training and similar activities.  Recent advances in this area, have created applications where robots are forcefully helping (in assistive devices) or resisting (in physical training) humans, resulting in surprisingly complicated patterns of interaction arising from relatively simple devices. This workshop is dedicated to discuss and explore the specific interdisciplinary aspects of Bodily human robot interaction, and establish a common ground for this area as a recognized and continued research topic. Bodily interaction with robots and robotic devices is partially established in niche applications such as exoskeletons, assistive devices and advanced machines for physical training, where bodily interaction IS the application. Bodily interaction is expected to develop a broader role in human robot interaction, for instance in manufacturing and in social and entertainment robotics. The direct exchange of force and motion in bodily interaction create a range of engineering challenges, but also entwine engineering directly with topics that traditionally reside in the realm of health and humanistic science, from biomechanics to humans social responses to the prompting and responses of physical interaction. In this workshop we explore the defining topics of physical HRI, with a focus on the inter- and transdisciplinary aspects that entwine robot control, robot mechanics, the human body and the mind into working applications, centered around bodily human robot interaction.

  • Bodily interaction as a communication with robots
  • Human robot bodily interaction for assistive devices
  • Physical training interaction with robots
  • Social robotics with forceful physical interaction
  • Measuring and understanding physical HRI
  • Physical HRI and collaboration
  • Robot body language in HRI
  • Body movement analysis of HRI

 Submission Deadline: February 1st, 2019

Notification of Acceptance: February 15th, 2019

Camera-ready Deadline: March 1st, 2019
 
Paper Submission

The paper format conforms roughly to an HRI submission: The allowed length is between 4 and 6 pages (including the references) depending on the contribution of the work (position paper or poster with demonstration). Accepted position paper contribution will be presented as a talk and accepted poster with demonstration contributions will be presented with a short presentation (3 minutes) and an interactive presentation with demonstration (1 hour).
