Borgernes hus in Odense is appointed as a Living Lab where SDU, the Municipality and other partners can test Smart City Technologies and collect data and knowledge. EnergiFyns Udviklingsfond has just donated kr. 247.000 for a project that tests IT-solutions and energy efficiency in Borgernes Hus.

Approximately 40% of Denmark’s energy consumption is used in buildings making energy optimization of buildings central when the aim is to save money and energy.

The project supported by EnergyFyns Udviklingsfond will look in to what the energy is used for in Borgernes Hus. Borgernes Hus a big public building (9,000 square meters) with many different functionalities such as library, citizen service centre, study groups, presentations etc. with a lot of people coming and going every day.

Sharing Data

The project will show how the use of Borgernes Hus will affect the energy consumption and comfort of the house. The knowledge from the Living Lab will then be possible to transfer to other buildings such as gym halls, schools etc.

First off measuring devices and sensors will be fitted to measure temperature, humidity, air quality, sound level, and light. This will be combined with data on energy consumption and user counts. The project will show the potential of using open data and big data technologies to enhance building performance and users comfort experience.

The collected data will afterwards be shared as open data via the Municipality of Odenses initiative, Open Data Odense. This way Borgernes Hus will continue to serve as a Living lab for new ideas and research by researchers, students, companies etc.
