Submission without prior enrolment

In certain cases, the PhD School may decide that a PhD can be subjected to assessment without the author having completed a PhD programme or the PhD programme having been interrupted. This is possible if the PhD School assesses that the author has otherwise acquired qualifications that can be equated with this, cf. the PhD Executive Order, section 15 (2).

If you want to apply for the submission of your PhD thesis without prior enrolment, this must be done using the PhD School’s form. Here you must explain how, in your opinion, you meet the requirements for a PhD course – i.e. how you have otherwise obtained qualifications that can be equated with the requirements in the PhD Executive Order for the PhD programme:

  • Completed PhD courses or similar activities corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
  • Participation in active research environments, including stays at other research institutions (primarily abroad), private research companies or the like
  • Gained experience with teaching activities or other forms of dissemination of knowledge related to the PhD project

Your statement must contain documentation of the mentioned activities. In addition, you must state whether the thesis has previously been submitted for assessment.

Submission

Your PhD thesis must be submitted electronically (PDF) to the PhD School’s secretariat via e-mail (phdsek@sam.sdu.dk) with the following documents as separate appendices:

  1. Application form
  2. Documentation of:

- Completed PhD courses or similar activities corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points

- Participation in active research environments, including stays at other research institutions (primarily abroad), private research companies or the like

- Gained experience with teaching activities or other forms of dissemination of knowledge related to the PhD project.

Your application must be accompanied by your statement and documentation of all the requirements listed above and will be assessed on the basis of the submitted material. Your application may be rejected if it does not meet the formality requirements.

Assessment of application

The Head of the PhD School will initially screen your application and the associated material. At the request of the Head of the PhD School, the relevant subject committee will initially assess whether the PhD thesis can be subjected to assessment based on the submitted application material – including whether you as an applicant have acquired qualifications that can be equated with the requirements of the PhD Executive Order for the completion of the PhD programme and whether you have a documented affiliation with SDU.

If the PhD School’s subject committee generally assesses that your thesis can be subjected to assessment in accordance with the PhD Executive Order, section 15 (2), you will be informed about the academic assessment.

After this, you will enter a payment agreement as an applicant and the PhD School will appoint an assessment committee. The assessment process and the holding of the public PhD defence will follow the current rules in the field.

Fee for assessment of the thesis and holding of PhD defence

If the PhD School’s subject committee assesses that the thesis can be subjected to assessment, as mentioned above, a payment agreement will have to be entered into. You will have to cover the costs in connection with the assessment of the thesis and the defence. The PhD School at the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences has set the fee for assessment of the thesis and the defence process at DKK 40,000.

If you have previously been enrolled in the PhD School under the Faculty of Business and Social Sciences during your entire PhD programme and disenrolled less than four years ago, you do not have to pay for the costs in connection with defence and assessment.
