Abstract:
Our ability to benchmark, verify, and control quantum devices ultimately rests on how well we understand their underlying dynamics. These dynamics are shaped not only by ideal Hamiltonian evolution, but also by time dependent effects and noise that arise in realistic settings. This talk will survey ideas for extracting meaningful dynamical descriptions of many qubit systems using simple, local measurements. Emphasis will be placed on how fundamental notions of locality limit the spread of information and make large scale quantum dynamics accessible through local data. The goal is to outline a set of ideas and methods that contribute to ongoing efforts to understand and characterize the dynamics of complex quantum devices.
