QM Research Seminar: Refining theta functions to topological modular forms

Speaker: Lennart Meier (Utrecht University)

Abstract:

Partition functions of 2-dimensional supersymmetric quantum field theories (SQFTs) are modular forms. Prominent examples are the theta functions arising from lattice conformal field theories. A philosophy due to Segal, Stolz and Teichner says that SQFTs allow a refinement of the partition function to *topological modular forms*. In our talk, we will give a short introduction to this theory and discuss how to refine theta functions to topological modular forms. If time allows, we will discuss the relationship to a potential new TQFT in dimension 3+1.
This is based on joint work with Sergei Gukov, Slava Krushkal and Du Pei.
