From Sample to Conclusion, Analysis of Materials and Surfaces

The Photonics Laboratory helps you understand materials, surfaces and products. We use advanced optical and spectroscopic analysis to investigate composition, contamination, defects, degradation and material variation. When one technique is not enough, we combine several complementary methods.

You can use the laboratory for product development, quality control, failure analysis and method validation. Our researchers define the right measurement strategy, perform and interpret the analyses, and translate the results into clear conclusions. The conclusions support your technical decisions and further development.

How to use Photonics and Imaging Lab

  • Discolouration, deposits or coating defects can be hard to trace back to their source. We compare damaged areas with unaffected areas on your product, side by side. This shows the chemical, elemental and structural differences between them.

    You get evidence that points to the likely cause of failure, so you know exactly what to change in materials or production processes.

  • Unknown particles, residues or inclusions can threaten your product quality and reliability. We determine the chemical composition, elemental content and appearance using complementary analytical methods.

    This helps you identify the material, distinguish contamination from the product itself and narrow down its likely origin, so you know the next step to take.

  • A product may look uniform while hiding important local differences that matter for performance. We map chemical and spectral variations across the surface, point by point. This reveals uneven coatings, contamination, mixed materials or local defects.

    You get a clear picture of where the variations occur and whether they are likely to affect product quality or performance.

  • Is your current quality control slow, manual or destructive to the sample? We test whether optical spectroscopy or hyperspectral imaging can detect the relevant defects or material differences in your product line.

    This gives you an early assessment of whether a fast, non contact inspection method can be developed for your production or quality control process.

  • When the cause of a problem is unclear, the wrong analytical method can quickly cost you both time and money. We help define the question clearly, select the most informative measurements and combine several methods when it is necessary for the task.

    You get a focused analysis and a clearer basis for deciding what to test, change or develop next in your product.

  • The Photonics Laboratory is located at Mads Clausen Institute, University of Southern Denmark, SDU Sønderborg.

  • Price and terms depend on the scope of the task and the analytical methods required. Using the Raman microscope costs approximately DKK 1,000 per hour, for example. Additional fees may apply for operator support, measurement setup, method development and data analysis.

    You receive a quotation based on your company's specific needs.

  • Yes. Confidentiality requirements can be discussed before the work starts, and appropriate agreements can be established when needed.

  • Measurements are normally carried out together with SDU researchers and technical staff. We help you plan the measurements, select suitable methods, and acquire and interpret the data.

    Access and scheduling are agreed individually, based on your project and the laboratory's availability.

  • We work with a broad range of materials and products, including polymers, coatings, particles, surfaces, electronic materials, pigments and other solid or liquid samples.

    Sample requirements depend on the selected analytical method and are discussed before measurements are scheduled.
