CREATE Lab helps you design, manufacture and test building components using robotic 3D printing and digital fabrication. We combine computational design and new materials to develop full-scale prototypes for your construction project.

3D printing and robotic fabrication of building components

CREATE Lab turns construction ideas into full-scale prototypes. We work with robotic 3D printing in concrete and clay, robotic fabrication of timber components, assembly and disassembly, and large-format polymer printing. Computational design helps explore ways to reduce material use, waste and CO2 emissions while considering strength and form.

We collaborate with companies, start-ups, architects and designers in construction, building materials and manufacturing. You gain access to physical prototyping, testing and process documentation. Specific deliverables are agreed according to your needs and the chosen design and fabrication method.

What the laboratory can help with

  • We combine 3D concrete printing with design that places material where it is structurally needed. Printed beams and slabs developed in the laboratory have shown CO2 and material savings in life-cycle assessments.

    You can collaborate with us to print, test and document optimised building components and investigate their potential for your project.

  • We develop reversible timber structures that robots can assemble, disassemble and rebuild, alongside digital methods for upcycling reclaimed timber. You can explore how design for disassembly and robotic fabrication support the reuse of timber products and building components.

    Prototypes and tests provide a basis for assessing the opportunities in your construction.

  • Through bioreceptive design, we shape the geometry, texture and porosity of 3D-printed surfaces to provide suitable habitats for mosses, plants or marine organisms.

    We help you investigate building components for urban and marine environments and test how material selection and surface design can support biodiversity.

  • We develop biocomposites from natural fibres and waste streams and use digital fabrication to produce customised architectural components.

    You can investigate the potential of your own residual materials and develop prototypes, providing a basis for assessing whether they can become new bio-based products for construction.

  • We equip robotic 3D printing with sensors, cameras and feedback systems that monitor the process and adjust it in real time. You can explore how more self-regulating fabrication responds to changing conditions and supports the production of building components.

    The work provides insight into opportunities for further process development.

  • CREATE Lab is located at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Southern Denmark, Campusvej 55, 5230 Odense M, Denmark.

  • Price and terms are agreed according to your specific needs and the scope of the collaboration.

  • The laboratory is staffed on weekdays from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. Robotic equipment is operated together with trained laboratory staff. Researchers support you from preparing digital files to fabrication and evaluation of the results.

  • No. We handle the technology and translate your problem into a design and fabrication setup.
