THEME: Micro-credentials - Stacking micro-credentials
Get knowledge of the term of stacking micro-credentials and one of the concerns of persons being able to make up an educational degree by stacking micro-credentials.
The whole point of stacking is to make it possible for the students themselves to compound micro-credentials and thereby, eventually, acquire a Master’s degree.
A report from the European Commission (European Commission, 2020, p. 16), emphasizes the expediency of using ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) in connection with micro-credentials, because the ECTS system is based on learning results and at the same time makes learning measurable. If the EU countries could agree that micro-credentials should apply the ECTS system, this would make it possible to stack micro-credentials in a transparent way, making both learning results and workload visible.
One major concern about compounding a university degree through micro-credentials (short courses) is that usually a Bachelor og Master’s degree is constructed with a logical structure, telling in which order of succession the different modules should be completed. It could be a challenge if the student is absolute free to determine the types of modules and the order of succession of the modules in his/her course.
