The approach to supervision of Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD students should therefore be deliberate, informed, and evidence-based. Most university lecturers have experience with students who, instead of listening, talk 'off-topic' with each other, answer e-mails, are on Facebook, leave the room in the middle of the lecture for self-selected coffee breaks, or simply stay away from the teaching. SDU Center for Teaching and Learning (SDUUP) attended Bett UK in London (British Educational Training and Technology Show), one of the biggest education technology exhibitions in the world. This month’s newsletter focuses on selected trends from Bett UK, trends that are also reflected in the latest Horizon report.

Newsletter February 2023: Ways in which professional coaching supports teaching

In this newsletter we introduce you to the professional coaching opportunities included in SDU’s Lecturer Training Programme. Three of our experienced supervisors, who coach participants in SDU’s Lecturer Training Programme (LTP) share their insights on group-work, the relational aspect and thesis supervision. We also hear from previous LTP participants, and why they value the supervision process so highly. They let us in on the different ways supervision has helped them develop as university teachers.

Tony S. Andersen shares some reflections on group work as an important democratic means of learning – also at university level. Though Danish students are used to working in groups through their educational programmes, the requirements of an academic setting may ask for making the expectations of students’ group work explicit.

Newsletter January 2023: TAL2022 – Developing student and graduate competences for the 21st Century

On the 8th November, 2022 together with local, national and international colleagues we celebrated SDU’s Teaching for Active Learning (TAL) conference’s 10th anniversary. The TAL conference was initiated in 2012 as a platform for university teachers to inspire fellow teachers by sharing their diverse interpretations of active teaching and learning and to profile SDU’s underlying principle for active teaching and learning.

Newsletter November 2022: Development of teachers’ digital competences

At SDU Centre for Teaching and Learning (SDUUP) we work continuously to quality-assure our initiatives and to develop new methods to support the improvement of teachers’ digital competences. In this newsletter we dive into SDUUP’s experiences over recent years with arranging so-called learning circles locally and cross-institutionally, in collaboration with UCN and UCL Erhvervsakademi og Professionshøjskole. The use of learning circles has been found to be a good bet for a competency development format, collegial and practice-oriented, that will strengthen the teachers’ digital competencies.

In this newsletter we invite you to a conference! In the beginning of June 2022, ICED22 - a large international for educational developers is held in Aarhus. For the 9th time, SDU Centre for Teaching and Learning hosted our annual Teaching for Active Learning conference - TAL2021 - on November 11, 2021. In 2019, Henrik Skov Midtiby, associate professor at the The Faculty of Engineering, and colleagues received funding from the E-learning project fund to design a new way to receive immediate feedback during lectures via a student response system based on drawing.

The Great Example - Entrepreneurship in Computer Science

Rolf Fagerberg is responsible for the innovation part of the course Formal Languages and Data Processing along with outreach coordinator Peter Bæksgaard Madsen, where students on the third year of the programme are required to develop an idea for a product and program a prototype. In the course, SDU Entrepreneurship Labs contribute a guest lecture on using Business Model Canvas in a practical setting, along with information on what they can offer the students after they have completed the course.

The Great Example - Technology Entrepreneurship

Søren Jensen from the Faculty of Engineering and Jannek Sol- gaard from SDU RIO have developed the course Technology Entrepreneurship, which puts focus on giving students theoretical and practical experience with entrepreneurship through a project-oriented course, where they work with developing their own startup.

In this month’s newsletter, you can read about advantages, possibilities and challenges to Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) as a learning tool in teaching and as a testing tool for exams. You will get insight into how MCQ is used through two articles, which focus on teachers who have used MCQ in their courses and exams.

Grith Lykke Sørensen has used multiple choice questions (MCQ’s) in exams. In the exams Grith has been responsible for, MCQ’s have been a part of the exam along with other exam tools like short answers. In general, Grith has found that MCQ is a good tool for exams when combined with other question types.

Multiple Choice Questions as a Teaching Activity

Mette Marie Hougaard Christensen has integrated multiple choice questions (MCQ’s) directly into her teaching. She describes MCQ’s as a great tool for engaging students and explains that you can avoid many of the challenges of the format if you spend time researching its strengths and weaknesses. Furthermore, she explains that it is easy to get started using MCQ’s in teaching environments.

COVID-19 has without a doubt changed the setting and conditions of teaching at higher education programmes. In this month’s newsletter, you can read about three different studies on teaching during the COVID-19 lockdown along with an interview with a teacher, who used Flipped Learning to engage her students. A broad range of educational institutions and participants are covered between the three studies.

Teaching with Flipped Learning Engaged Students During the Lockdown

Marit Carolin Clausen has used Flipped Learning to engage students during the lockdown in a course, where the practical teaching form was challenged by the limited possibilities of using a physical classroom. Marit’s way of teaching turned out to be very rewarding for the students, with many of them expressing their excitement in the course evaluation – some of them said they would prefer Marit’s model going forward instead of having every lesson in the course in a physical classroom.

THEME: TAL2020 - The Great Example - Lab@Home

At the TAL2020 conference, Alexander H. Treusch, Associate Professor at The Department of Biology, presented a way of conducting practice-based lab teaching during the difficult circumstances, caused by COVID-19 for most teachers at SDU. The method, Lab@Home, let students work on experiments in the Microbiology course, which could easily be carried out at home.

THEME: TAL2020 - The Great Example - The Student's Journey

At the TAL2020 conference Tine Lynfort Jensen, Career and Employability Consultant with SDU RIO, and Jesper Piihl, Vice-Head of Department for Education, Department of Entrepreneurship and Relationship Management, presented The Student’s Journey. Jesper and Tine are part of the group behind The Student’s Journey and describe it as a dialogue and a constant reflection on how to create a holistic education, which in addition to academic knowledge gives the students an array of personal and professional qualifications.

THEME: TAL2020 - The Great Example – Sustainable Materials in Product Creation

At TAL2020, Lykke Margot Ricard, Associate Professor and Head of MSc Programme in Civil Engineering in Product Development and Innovation, and Research Assistant Sofie Bach Hybel, a former student in the programme, presented their experiences with the course Sustainable Materials in Product Creation. Furthermore, they explained how they have worked with the UN’s SDG 12, which involves Responsible Consumption and Production.

Starting this January, SDU will get a new learning platform: itslearning. This means that all courses from February 1 will be supported by itslearning rather than Blackboard. In cooperation with the faculties, SDUUP’s task will be to guide and support teachers in their transition to the new platform. In this month’s newsletter, you can read about how we do just that.

Newsletter September 2020: Project Digital Competences through Learning Circles is about to launch at SDU

Starting this October, learning circles will be a part of the competence development of teachers at SDU. Therefore, the focus of September Month’s newsletter is on the Project Digital Competences through Learning Circles, which studies the effect of a cooperative and practice-oriented competence development through so-called Learning Circles.

Project Digital Competences through Learning Circles launches at SDU in October 2020. An important part of the project is the digital resource platform, which project participants will use as a starting point for their learning during the learning circles. The resource collection has been developed in cooperation between UCL, UCN and SDU, the three institutions participating in the project. Furthermore, the collection is publicly available, since the content is useful not only for the project participants.
