Plagiarism in Ouriginal

The plagiarism system Ouriginal (formerly known as Urkund) is used to check if assignments contain plagiarism.

If you suspect that the student has not written parts of the assignment him- or herself, you can check the assignment in the plagiarism tool Ouriginal. Ouriginal calculates a percentage score based on analysis of whether text or paragraphs appear elsewhere in the source.

Ouriginal checks against 3 sources: the internet, material from publishing companys and other institutions licensed to the system. Most Danish universities today use Ouriginal. Previous assignments submitted at SDU are also checked by Ouriginal.

3 things worth knowing about plagiarism in Ouriginal

1. You have to check the plagiarism reports yourself.
All assignments submitted in “Digital Exam” are automatically checked for plagiarism in Ouriginal. But you as the teacher is responsible for reviewing the plagiarism report. You should always review the report if the plagiarism check shows a high overlap score or if you are reviewing an assignment where you suspect plagiarism

2. A high overlap score need not be an expression of cheating.
A high overlap may also be because the student has many quotes in the assignment or because more students have the same books on the literature list. There can also be large differences from subject to subject - and from study to study - as to when the score is high. Ouriginal does not check sources for pictures/graphs which can inflate the plagiarism score. You therefore need to get an overview of what the average is for each exam, and then study the assignments that stand out.

3. Less documentation is needed than you have been used to up till now.
If Ouriginal has already found the problematic sections, you do not need to indicate sources of the overlap in the assignment, as the Ouriginal report all by itself constitutes the necessary documentation for a plagiarism case, cf. 2 below. However, in the case of plagiarism from physical sources, you will have to use the old standard method.

How to access the plagiarism reports
When you are logged in to “Digital Exam” you can see text similarity (in percentage) next to each exam participant:

When clicking the arrow next to the score you can access a list of the submitted documents (the assignment itself and any attachments). When you click on the document name, the Ouriginal report opens for that document.

Cannot see the source?
If you get the error below when you try to access the source, you have to send the file number of the source to dklhub@sam.sdu.dk. You get the file number under the tab 'Sources' (see below).

Source cannot be viewed.
What if you suspect plagiarism?

1. If you suspect plagiarism, whether you are a teacher, external examiner or internal examiner, you should contact the Head of Study for a professional assessment. The Ouriginal analysis cannot stand alone.
2. The teacher or Head of Study sends the Urkund report and the student's assignment to the legality team.
3. The legality team records the case and sends it to the educational legal team which will conduct the further case processing.

Plagiarism check of assignments submitted in other systems
If you want a plagiarism check of assignments submitted in other systems where there are no automatic plagiarism check, please send an email with the assignment to dklhub@sam.sdu.dk. Plagiarism checks in Its Learning's assignments are also done by Ouriginal, but must be turned on for every assignment manually.
