SDU still ranks among the leading sustainable universities

The internationally recognised magazine Times Higher Education ranks SDU 93rd among 1,400 universities from around the world. Based on the universities’ work with sustainability, SDU is pleased with the ranking, even though the university was ranked 23rd last year.

The work with sustainability means SDU still ranks among the top 100 in the world. This was established in a ranking table recently published by the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Ranking 2022.

Based on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it compares the efforts of 1400 universities in terms of everything from research to ensuring clean bathing and drinking water to reducing food waste from the canteen.

In the latest rankings, the University of Southern Denmark’s sustainability efforts have been assessed to be at a high international level – which ranks SDU 93rd among the universities. Although this is a decline compared to last year, SDU is doing about as well and even seeing progress on certain parameters. The change in the ranking is due to the fact that a number of universities have joined since last year, which increases competition.

Dedicated, strategic efforts at the University

In 15 out of 17 of the SDGs, SDU ranks among the world’s 25% best universities, and this year, the decent ranking is partly due to the fact that SDU has published strategic statements and plans for the University’s sustainability efforts.

SDU has prepared sustainability and carbon footprint reports to make its entire strategic work with the SDGs more visible and showcase points that require a concentrated effort.

The data from the international ranking table are analysed by SDU Analytics together with the SDG HUB. They are used to measure the current situation at SDU compared to other universities. The ranking confirms what the University is doing well and needs to do more of.
