SDU Life Cycle Engineering focuses on education and research contributing to global sustainability
SDU Life Cycle Engineering conducts research in industrial ecology and life cycle engineering. Our mission is to advance systems-based engineering knowledge that enables the sustainable transformation of energy, agri-food, industrial and societal systems within planetary boundaries.
We focus on the assessment and design of technologies, products and systems, with particular emphasis on circular economy, resource efficiency and low-carbon transitions. An important goal is to provide robust and decision-relevant knowledge that can be used by industry, public authorities and other societal actors.
Our research combines holistic systems analysis with advanced quantitative methods, including life cycle assessment, material flow analysis, energy system modellingdesign & analysis, techno-economic evaluationanalysis, Safe and Sustainable by Design, and data-driven and spatiotemporal approaches. We use these methods to understand environmental impacts and resource flows, explore alternative pathways, and support evidence-based decision-making.
SDU Life Cycle Engineering conducts internationally leading research, mainly through externally funded research projects and in close collaboration with industry, policymakers and interdisciplinary research partners.
SDU Life Cycle Engineering is responsible for SDU's Master programme in Environmental Engineering, with an intake of around 25 students per year. We also contribute to engineering education in Energy systems, Civil Engineering, Product Development and Innovation, and Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, as well as other related programmes. Our teaching is closely connected to our research and uses problem-oriented, practice-based learning to prepare students to work with complex sustainability challenges.
