Collaborating internationally
One of our main objectives is to strengthen international collaboration. In addition to our membership of the Scientific Committee of the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists, we have initiated an international research project in collaboration with researchers from the hospital pharmacy in Leuven, Belgium, and Maastricht, the Netherlands. The project focuses on understanding and defining clinical pharmacy across Europe and is expected to be completed in 2026.
We are also involved in another international initiative – a COST Action project titled Addressing Adverse Drug Events Across the Continuum of Care: IPD meta-analysis & pooled dataset creation of patient characteristics & clinically adjudicated adverse drug events. The aim of this project is to conduct a meta-analysis of individual patient data on clinically assessed adverse drug events, to compile a pooled dataset of patient characteristics and adverse events from relevant studies, and to use this dataset to help reduce the occurrence of such events.
In 2024, we further strengthened our collaboration with the hospital pharmacy in Uppsala through international research stays for PhD students, and we began drafting joint publications on sustainability in collaboration with researchers from other European countries.
Collaborating nationally
HoPRU is leading the national clinical pharmacy project Prescribing medicines for patients with impaired kidney function. Nationwide data collection was completed in 2024, and the first two of four articles have now been published in international peer-reviewed journals.
PhD student Nathalie Fogh Rasmussen is heading a doctoral project on the use of registry data to examine sociodemographic inequality in relation to diagnostic investigations and treatment of patients with chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The project is conducted in collaboration with Centre Director Tine Jess from the national basic research centre PREDICT (Centre for Molecular Prediction of Inflammatory Bowel Disease), Professor Emeritus Anders Green from Steno Diabetes Center Odense, and Consultant Pathologist Gunvor Iben Madsen from the Department of Clinical Pathology at Odense University Hospital – all of whom serve as co-supervisors for the PhD project.
Collaborating regionally
HoPRU has initiated a research collaboration between hospital pharmacies in the region, focusing on joint knowledge sharing and exploring opportunities for coordinated efforts.
We also contribute to the supervision of pharmacy students in collaboration with, among others, the psychiatric services in the Region of Southern Denmark, Hospice Sønderjylland, and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Southern Denmark.
Local and cross-sector partnerships
HoPRU has launched projects investigating models of collaboration with clinical departments at Hospital of Southern Jutland and general practitioners. These projects focus on medication reviews, cross-sector communication related to pharmacotherapy, and identifying which patients are most likely to benefit from the service. A pilot project has been completed in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, while a randomised controlled trial is currently underway in the Emergency Department.
University of Southern Denmark and Department of Regional Health Research
IRS can be seen as a network consisting of nearly 300 researchers in over 50 research units, each with its own research leader. The research units are anchored at 12 hospitals in the Region Zealand, Region of Southern Denmark, and Capital Region of Denmark.
