Sustainability Assessment of RoRo Terminal and Ship Operations within The RoRo Green Project

As part of the RoRoGreen project, the PhD project  focuses on assessing the sustainability of marine terminal operations. Ports are looking for new modes of operation to reduce or eliminate harmful pollution sources, motivated by the European Union's decarbonization plan and driven by the climate crisis.

Digitizing terminal operations and investing in new and green technologies are believed to have potential benefits in reducing harmful emissions, but the challenge is to achieve this in an economically viable way while creating value for society as well. For this, it is necessary to quantitatively or qualitatively measure and monitor the economic, environmental and social impact of current and future scenarios, which is understood as an evaluation of sustainability.

The evaluation of current operations defines the baseline, with which the sustainability impact of new possible solutions is compared to assess whether and to what level economic, environmental and social performance is improved, thus contributing to decision-making. Discrete event simulation will be tested, along with other simulation techniques, as an approach to assess the sustainability performance of terminal operations in different ports.
