When Lightning Strikes: Challenges for Cybersecurity in Smart Metering and Smart Grids

Friday the 1th November 2013 Meiko Jensen Adjunct lecturer at Kiel University of Applied Sciences visited Center for Smart Energy Solutions and held the seminar:

When Lightning Strikes: Challenges for Cybersecurity in Smart Metering and Smart Grids

The current evolution of smart energy networks in Europe is driven by huge promises of business advantages to both energy providers and consumers. Unfortunately, the move towards automated metering and regulation of energy grids also raises some severe challenges in terms of security and privacy.

In this talk, I will iterate over some of the most pressing issues in smart energy networks, such as privacy in smart metering, meter data integrity and confidentiality in smart grids, and cybersecurity aspects of energy market collaborations. Derived from these analyses, I will outline potential solutions based on applied cryptography, threat modeling, and model-driven security development. Finally, I will briefly discuss open research challenges in these fields.
