Sustainable AI in Health Informatics
PhD student: Josephine Plass-Wolter
PhD Supervisor: Aparna Varde
Co-Supervisor: Joakim Bruslund Haurum
Josephine’s PhD research focuses on investigating sustainable AI approaches for health informatics. The aim is to develop healthcare solutions that combine clinical value with computational efficiency, ensuring that AI technologies can be used responsibly and effectively. By addressing both technical performance and sustainability, the research seeks to create reliable AI systems that support healthcare professionals and improve outcomes for patients while contributing to a more sustainable healthcare sector.
Transition to Green AI
PhD student: Purbak Sengupta
PhD Supervisor: Aparna Varde
Co-Supervisor: Emil Njor
Purbak’s PhD research focuses on developing sustainable and resource-aware AI systems for real-time decision support, with the goal of enabling a transition toward greener AI. It investigates how sensing, domain knowledge, model complexity, computational fidelity and execution resources can be dynamically adapted to the needs of each decision. The research aims to achieve reliable and trustworthy AI while reducing energy consumption, computational cost, communication overhead and carbon footprint, particularly in resource-constrained and real-time environments.
Explainable AI with Commonsense Knowledge
PhD student: Jon Tamang Ringstrøm
PhD Supervisor: Aparna Varde
Co-Supervisor: Juan Heredia
Jon’s PhD research focuses on explainable and socially appropriate robot decision-making through commonsense and domain knowledge. The work builds interpretable AI decision models that draw on knowledge bases to guide robot behavior and generate understandable explanations in human-robot collaboration. Evaluation will be based on the measure of trust and other human-centered factors through interaction with people on a physical robot at SDU Vejle.
